Rancher A new life Animal Care Planner
Morning and evening care toggles for five ranch animals — syncs in your browser, not your Steam save.
Daily animal care board
Toggle morning and evening chores. Progress saves in this browser only.
Chickens
Eggs, fodder or pasture, and coop security — seven breeds listed on Steam.
Cows
Milking, hay from mowed grass, and extended illness-aware care.
Dog
Herding helper — feed, water, tricks, and gate access matter.
Horse
Riding and accessories — stable routine before long map trips.
Bees
Hive collection near gardens — watch wasp nests elsewhere on the map.
Livestock and companions drive the daily rhythm in Rancher: A new life. Steam Early Access highlights cows and chickens with extended care and breeding including illnesses, a dog that herds and learns tricks, rideable horses with accessories, beehives, and six cow breeds plus seven chicken breeds. Goats and sheep appear on the Full Access roadmap — this planner covers the five animal types most beginners meet first: Chickens, Cows, Dog, Horse, and Bees. Use the interactive board above for feed, water, collect, mood, and shelter toggles; use this article for timing, expansion, and links into deeper guides.
Design philosophy
The planner assumes twice-daily checks — a morning round before shop trips and an evening round before sleep — plus optional midday water or mood passes during heat or quest stress. It does not simulate in-game disease RNG or wild-animal attacks (boar, wolf, fox) that Steam lists as map hazards. Instead it builds habits so you notice empty troughs before fines or unhappy animals hurt sales price.
Progress saves to localStorage key rancher-wiki-animal-care. Clearing browser data wipes toggles; the game save is unaffected.
Chickens
Public copy emphasises collecting eggs, feeding with fodder or pasture access, maintaining water, breeding, and caring about mental state. Demo patch notes adjusted chicken spawn timing and quest eggs — ranch-sourced eggs matter for progression.
Feed — Top up fodder or confirm pasture gates open before you leave for the agricultural shop.
Water — Small flocks dehydrate faster than new players expect, especially if coops sit far from the house.
Collect — Gather eggs daily; decide sell vs cook vs quest hold before inventory fills.
Mood — Stroking is explicitly welcome on Steam; fit a quick pass after collecting.
Shelter — Close coop doors if night predators or storms are active in your save week.
When you outgrow one coop, read How to Raise Animals before buying seven breeds at once.
Cows
Cows tie into milking by hand or equipment, pasture grass cutting for hay, compost from barn cleanup, and cow-shed renovation. Illness and breeding systems mean skipping water hurts harder than with chickens.
Feed — Balance fodder vs pasture; hay from mowed grass links to Farming & Crops grass loops.
Water — Trough checks are non-negotiable before milking.
Collect — Milk on a schedule; store for cooking themes in the Recipe Finder.
Mood — Stroking and clean bedding affect the extended care systems Steam advertises.
Shelter — Expanded sheds arrive as renovation projects; until then, verify fences after wild-animal events.
Dog
The dog is optional but powerful: herding to pasture, fetch, feeding, and tricks. Treat the dog as a worker pet — plan feed and water alongside livestock even though collection toggles differ.
Feed / Water — Keep bowls near the house if the dog escorts you on foot.
Mood — Short trick practice prevents the companion feeling like a cosmetic purchase.
Shelter — Ensure the dog can reach gates you expect it to herd through; blocked paths cause more frustration than hunger.
Herding pairs with horse and quad options later; day-one players should still walk the route once without vehicles to learn fence gaps.
Horse
Horses add riding, accessories, and faster ranch traversal. They are not a replacement for truck or pickup maintenance but reduce time between chicken coop and orchard.
Feed / Water — Stable or hitching areas need the same consistency as barn animals.
Mood — Riding itself is recreation per store marketing; include it in mood care when chores allow.
Shelter — Full Access promises stables; Early Access players should still note where the horse waits during storms.
Collect — No egg-or-milk collect row; use that mental slot for gear or hoof-space inventory checks instead.
Bees
Beehives introduce collection and placement decisions near gardens and orchard paths. Wasps elsewhere on the map sting if you get too close — bees still reward organised flower and crop planning.
Feed — Floral diversity and nearby plantings matter more than fodder sacks; treat “feed” as floral/forage readiness in the planner.
Water — Some builds use proximity to water sources; confirm hive placement guides after launch on Farming & Crops.
Collect — Harvest hive products on a rhythm that does not steal time from milking.
Shelter — Winter or storm protection may matter depending on patch weather; tick shelter when you inspect hive housing.

Adjust when NPC farmhands (barn, garden, orchard) unlock — four helpers are listed on Steam — but never outsource learning the first week.
Scaling without overwhelm
Follow the First Day Checklist rule: one new species at a time. Duplicate planner tabs in your head before buying bees plus cows plus extra chicken breeds. Market trips to the animal market and veterinary shop should happen after today’s toggles are mostly green.
Health, breeding, and sales
Illness, breeding, and selling are core cow and chicken systems but too granular for checkbox toggles. Track them in How to Raise Animals and the in-game Animal registry app. When illness icons appear, pause expansion purchases until vet trips fit the budget in How to Make Money.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common ranch questions.
Why are goats and sheep missing?
Steam lists them for Full Access, not the initial Early Access bullet set focused here. We will add tabs when official builds include them.
How often should I reset toggles?
Each real morning or in-game day start. Use Reset on the tool if you want a blank board mid-save.
Does mood care matter mechanically?
Steam explicitly mentions mental state and stroking for livestock. Exact numbers need in-game verification after launch.
Can NPC farmhands auto-complete these toggles?
Helpers exist for barn, garden, and orchard work, but you should still verify feed and water personally until routines feel automatic.
