Rancher A new life First Day Checklist

Your first session in Rancher: A new life sets the tone for every later system: bills, workshop boards, fishing, greenhouse expansion, and wild-animal fence repairs all assume you already understand food, sleep, inventory, and saving. Steam markets the game as a relaxing escape from city life, but the ranch still punishes skipped meals, neglected sleep, and animals bought before water lines work. This page pairs a persistent browser checklist (above the article body) with a written route you can adapt to demo practice or Early Access day one.
Public store copy and demo patch notes emphasise tutorials for cooking, cleaning, chickens, wood processing, mushrooms, and at least one workshop project. Treat those as training wheels, not optional fluff. The checklist below converts them into an ordered plan you can finish across one long evening or three shorter visits.
Why order matters
Ranch simulators feel open-ended, which makes it easy to drive to the animal market, buy decor, or start quad racing before you can reliably eat and sleep. Reordering the first day reduces soft-lock frustration: settings and inventory first, survival second, one productive repair third, cooking fourth, one animal fifth, workshop sixth, save last.
Developer devlogs mention quality-of-life fixes to toolbelt behaviour, cooking difficulty, and chicken quest logic — all signals that inventory and food loops are core, not side content. Following the checklist keeps spending aligned with function.
Settings and comfort
Before walking the property, open options and adjust mouse sensitivity, invert toggles, subtitles, and audio mix. Early Access adds controller support on the full game; the demo remains keyboard and mouse only. Comfortable camera control matters because first-person chores — mowing, cleaning, nailing boards — run for hours.
Note whether the game shows interaction prompts clearly. If text size or motion feels wrong, fix it now rather than after you are tired and lost in the barn.
Inventory and toolbelt
Learn how to pick up, drop, store, and equip tools. Steam describes stock spaces for resources in the barn and expanded wood processing (logs to boards). You do not need a perfect layout on day one, but you should know where food, repair materials, and quest items go.
Demo players report that toolbelt patches changed how quickly you swap between hammer, cleaning tools, and fishing gear. Spend five minutes deliberately moving items so panic later does not mean leaving quest eggs or mushrooms on the porch.
Food, sleep, and fatigue
The store page lists eating healthy, sleeping enough, and avoiding overtiredness as part of the recreation loop alongside fishing and harmonica practice. Fast food remains an option early, but vegetables, fish, and milk tie into long-term cooking and money plans.
Checklist goal: finish one full eat-sleep cycle deliberately. Watch how fatigue UI warns you before skills penalties stack. Link forward to How to Cook once you want crops and recipes instead of convenience meals.
One meaningful repair
House renovation is a headline feature: patch roof holes, fill wall gaps, paint, and later replace furniture. On day one, choose one repair that unlocks access or safety — a bedroom you can sleep in, a kitchen you can cook in, or a fence gap that lets chickens wander off-map.
Do not attempt whole-house restoration before income exists. House Renovation explains larger projects; the checklist only needs proof you understand the repair mini-loop and material costs.
Cook one meal
Early Access ships with 29 recipes for stove, BBQ, and campfire, plus cooking books hidden around the ranch. Devlogs added a coffee-brewing quest and eased perfect-cook timing. Even if you eat fast food first, cook one scripted or unlocked meal so you see ingredient sourcing.
If you practiced in the demo, repeat a familiar recipe. Otherwise follow the in-game cooking tutorial and cross-check themes in the Recipe Finder.
Add one animal — not a whole barn
Steam lists cows, chickens, goats, sheep, bees, dog, cat, and horse content, but beginner routes should start with either chickens or cows once feed, water, and shelter are confirmed — not both species plus a dog on hour two.
Verify pasture or fodder, water access, and collection timing (eggs or milk). Use the Animal Care Planner the same evening so tomorrow’s chores are already listed.
Workshop touchpoint
Two workshop projects exist in the public Early Access list. Day one does not require finishing furniture building, but you should cut or process one board-related task so logs, nails, and bench space feel familiar before you build fences or birdhouses.
See Workshop & Crafting for bigger structures. The checklist only marks that you opened the workshop and completed or started a simple craft step.
Save before quitting
Save and load is explicitly listed for Early Access. Make a manual save after animals are fed and repairs are stable — not mid-quest with inventory chaos. Name the moment mentally: “end of day one checklist” so you know which file to load if you experiment on day two.
After the checklist
Once every box is ticked, shift from survival to planning: read Getting Started, skim Map Locations for shop routes, and decide whether the demo taught you enough to skip repeating chores. Return here anytime you restart a save or coach a friend.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common ranch questions.
Can I finish the checklist across multiple in-game days?
Yes. The tool is for real-world organisation. Tick items when the underlying skill is learned, even if your character sleeps between steps.
Should I buy a dog on day one?
Only after food, sleep, and one livestock routine work. Steam sells the dog as a herding helper, not a substitute for water and feed basics.
What if I skip the workshop step?
You can, but board processing underpins fences, furniture, and pickup repairs. At least process one log or start one small project early.
Does the checklist reset when the game updates?
Game patches do not touch browser storage. Use the Reset button on the tool if you begin a new save and want a clean list.
